Meeting Your Anger with Love: Reflections from the Workshop

There’s something powerful that happens when a group of women come together, drop the masks, and speak their truth, share from their hearts, and hold space for each other. The initial welcome shares, where we introduce ourselves and share our intentions for the workshop were already so powerful and honest - that I skipped a whole element of the workshop that was meant to create safety and reduce shame for us. It wasn't necessary because everyone was ready to be fully present, to be seen, heard and held. It was incredible.

During the Meeting Your Anger with Love workshop, one thing became clear—most of us don’t actually feel our emotions. We push them away, we push them down, and we tell ourselves to “just get on with it.”

But here’s the thing: when we bury our emotions, they don’t disappear—they show up in our bodies, in our relationships, in our outbursts.

Why Do We supress our Anger?

We explored this question deeply, drawing on Dr. Gabor Maté’s theory of authenticity vs. attachment. From the time we are small, we learn that certain emotions are acceptable and others are not—especially as mothers. We learn that being “good” means keeping the peace, staying patient, and never letting anger show. We trade authenticity for connection.

And then there’s Dr. Sophie Brock’s “Perfect Mother Myth”—the impossible, unspoken standard that tells us we must be endlessly selfless, calm, and in control. Is it any wonder we push down our frustration, resentment, and exhaustion?

It was fascinating to unpack questions like:

  • Why does a messy house bother us so much? Are we actually overwhelmed, or are we afraid of being judged as a bad mum?

  • Why do we struggle to express anger in healthy ways? Are we afraid of being seen as out of control, ungrateful, or not “good enough”?

  • How do I prioritise my needs, when my kids have so many needs? Is it selfish or a fundamental right to meet our own needs, too?

What Mums Said About the Workshop

Hearing from the mothers who attended was just as powerful as the discussions themselves. Here’s what some of them shared afterward:

  • “I feel empowered and motivated to change.”

  • “I feel relieved that I made it through—ha! It also made me feel sad that so many mums feel like this, but we’re all so alone in our journey.”

  • “I’m reflecting on why I feel this need for perfection—and how the f** I can change that.”

  • “I feel hopeful that I can work through anger & express it in a healthy way instead of letting it simmer until I explode.”

  • “Afterwards, I felt relaxed and at peace. It lifted my mood, and I wanted to do it all again.”

What’s Next?

This work is deep, important, and freeing. The next Meeting Your Anger with Love workshop is in planning, and if this resonates with you—I’d love to have you join us.

Because this isn’t just about “managing anger.” It’s about making sure we actually enjoy our lives, feel content in motherhood, and create the strong, beautifully genuine bond with our children that we all deserve.

Warmly,

Lisa
