Mental Health Support Ocean Grove

‘I feel energised and given permission to find and establish my own space and voice creatively.’

Journaling gives us the chance to check in on good days and bad days and put things into perspective.

“Being able to see that other women were having similar worries to me and were able to express them in a journal as well as talk about them, was really helpful.”

Mothers Group Ocean Grove

‘What I find so brilliant is the honesty of everyone, the mutual respect and interest.’

Journaling with other people brings support and encouragement, similar to women’s making circles throughout history. It creates space for sharing your work and connecting over similar experiences.

Hi! I am Lisa.

Like many of you, my early motherhood journey wasn't all sunshine and snuggles. Postnatal depression lurked in the shadows, whispering doubts and stealing my confidence.

I felt lost, unheard, drowning in a sea of expectations and unspoken needs. The resources were scarce, the support system patchy at best. I didn’t know it then but looking back now I know I needed a safe space to share my struggles, a haven where vulnerability wouldn't be met with judgment, but with understanding and guidance.

But you know what? I emerged from the other side as the real me, determined to be the help I craved for other mums. That's how Walk with Lisa was born. And since then, I have been looking for the answer: what can help? What do we (mothers) really need in this culture? That’s when I discovered Maternal Journal. It wasn't just a group, it was the answer to my question, "What is truly needed?" A beacon of support, a canvas for creative expression, and a safe space for mums to be vulnerable and to connect.

Through guided creative journaling exercises, poetry, and shared experiences, you will learn to:

  • Unleash your inner artist: put your fears and joys onto the page, connecting to yourself.

  • Connect with other mums who "get it."

  • Nurture your well-being: Self-care will become your superpower, fuelling your resilience and confidence.

  • Embrace the wobble: Perfection goes out the window, replaced with authentic, imperfect you.

Maternal Journal is about YOU, Mama. Are you looking for:

  • A safe space to share your joys and struggles without judgement?

  • A supportive tribe of mums who understand the rollercoaster ride of motherhood?

  • Creative tools to explore your emotions and reconnect with your inner spark?

  • A chance to prioritise your well-being and rediscover yourself?

Then maternal journal is your cup of tea!

Maternal Journal is a global community movement.

Offering creative tools and techniques to support the huge changes, joys and challenges we go through in pregnancy, birth and parenthood.

Maternal Journal have worked with some incredible artists, therapists, doulas and friends to make beautiful journaling resources for you to use.

Each step-by-step activity shows you how to make something for your journal. Choose from styles including poetry and prose writing to drawing and painting – all designed to fit in with the busy life of a parent.

Group of mums at Maternal Journal Workshop in Ocean Grove

Join our group!

The Maternal Journal group provides a positive outlet for some of the new feelings and challenges you might experience, both physically and emotionally in pregnancy and parenthood. Through a series of creative workshops, we will explore the practice of journaling to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

One of the best things about journaling in a group is sharing a safe space to connect with other people. By exploring our emotions, thoughts and experiences in a creative way, we get to be vulnerable and connect with each other through the language of art.

Each session is guided by a different journaling exercise, including poetry and prose writing to collage, drawing and painting.

The group is facilitated by me, Lisa Quinney, Perinatal Counsellor, mother of two, and passionate creative. I provide an inclusive and safe space for anyone who has experienced pregnancy, given birth, identifies as a mother or as a woman or non-binary carer.

Please be aware that strong feelings can emerge during the group workshops, and they are not recommended for people with a history of severe mental illness.
